In their January 24th match-up with the Lady Bears of Miles College (MC), the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) entered the game with confidence after winning their last four consecutive games. They were looking to extend their win streak to five against a Lady Bear team that they had defeated earlier in the season by 22 points. In their 58-57 loss to the Lady Bears, if there is one thing that the Lady Wildcats learned, it's that confidence alone does not win games.
Trailing by eight points at halftime (29-21), FVSU outscored the Lady Bears in the second half by seven points. However, the second half rally was not enough to overcome a Miles College team that played, perhaps, one of the best games of the season.
For the game, MC shot 43% from the floor. The Lady Wildcats shot 33% from the field. Ranked second in the conference entering the game, the loss by FVSU pushed them down to third in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) play.
Freshman Jayme Gilbert led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 17 points. Senior Jasmine Birdsong finished with 12 points. Courtney English and Toccara Charles led the Lady Bears in scoring with 18 and 15 points, respectively.
Now 12-5 overall and 10-3 in conference action, the Lady Wildcats continue their eight game home stand on Thursday from the HPE Complex when they host the Lady Magicians of LeMoyne-Owen College at 6 p.m.
