FORT VALLEY, GA (November 22, 2014) – Fort Valley State University Lady Wildcats was led in scoring by senior center
Brittnee Hazel with 20 points in their loss to Florida Tech University 71-83 in this on Saturday, November 22 at the HPE Complex on FVSU campus.
Fort Valley State overall record moves to 1-3 and Florida Tech record improves to 2-0.
Both team stat wise were even for the tonight with FVSU hitting 14-of-31 (45.2 percent) shots from the field during the first half and made 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) free throw. The team scored on 13-of-35 (37.1 percent) field goals in the second half, while hitting 7-of-14 (50.0 percent) foul shots.
Florida Tech made 36.8 percent (14-of-38) of its shots in the first half, 50.0 percent (4-8) from 3-point land and 83.3 percent (5-of-6) at the foul line. The Lady Panthers made 36.6 percent (15-of-41) of their shots in the second half and 15-of-27 (55.6 percent) from the free throw line.
The Lady Wildcats made 27-of-66 (40.9 percent) shots from the floor for the game, 5-of-18 three pointers for 27.8 percent and 12-of-21 (57.1 percent) foul shots.
Florida Tech scored off 29-of-79 (36.7 percent) baskets, 5-of-17 (29.4 percent) shot from behind the arc and 20-of-33 (60.6 percent) on the charity line.
FVSU jumped out to a 9-0 run before allowing Florida Tech to get on the board. Sophomore forward
Shereba Montgomery's jumper gave FVSU their largest lead 17-7 at the 12:43 mark. Florida Tech's Tiesha Flagler jumper closed the gap to 24-22 with 6:16 to go. The Lady Wildcats increased the lead by 4 three times, before the Florida Tech would gained their first lead 29-31 with 3:26 left. Then, with nine seconds remaining to half, Kayk Wilson two free throws increased the Lady Panthers lead to 39-35. Hazel's layup with four seconds left sent FVSU to the lock room down 37-39.
The Lady Panthers increased their lead in the second half 58-43 with 12:09 left, before FVSU went on a 16-6 run with 6:57 left for a 57-61 score.
The teams were even on the boards with 49 rebounds, while Florida Tech gained 40 points to FVSU's 36 points in paint, scored 25 points to FVSU's 10 off turnovers, 10 points off fast breaks to FVSU's two and the Lady Panthers bench players added 24 points to FVSU's 16.
Hazel, also had a game-high 14 rebounds, while scoring on 10-of-18 baskets and blocking two shots. Senior forward
Carmenonique Dawson chipped in 12 points and made 4-of-4 free throws, with freshman forward
Amber Harris adding 8 rebounds. Red-shirt junior
Tonisha Wilson dished out 4 assist.
Kayk Wilson led the Lady Panthers with 36 points, while scoring on 11-of-23 shots and making 10-of-13 free throws. Jasmine Brown grabbed 7 rebounds and scored 12 points.
FVSU next game is Tuesday, November 25 at North Georgia College at 5:30 p.m.
