FORT VALLEY, GA (February 7, 2015) – The Fort Valley State University Lady Wildcats (8-16; 6-7) senior point guard
Antionna Jefferson (Opelika, AL) led the team in scoring with a game-high 22-points in defeat to Paine College (8-13; 6-7) 61-54 on Saturday afternoon at HPE Complex.
The Lady Wildcats shot a poor 10.5 percent from the field in the first half and a little better 20 percent from the line. FVSU hit 21-of-77 baskets (27.3 percent) for the game, while making 56.3 percent at the foul line (9-16).
Paine made 10-of-31 shots by half (32.3 percent) and 50 percent (4-8) from the free throw line. The Lady Lions hit 21-of-62 shots from the floor for the game (33.9 percent) and 53.1 percent at the line (17-32).
Jefferson sank 9-of-19 baskets, hit two 3-pointers, went 2-of-2 free throws and grabbed 4 rebounds. Senior point guard
D'Ambria Thomas (Pelham, GA) dished out 3 assist and pull in 8 rebounds with two blocked shots. Senior center
Brittnee Hazel (Loganville, GA) posted another double-double night with a game-high 19 rebounds, 12 points, 6 blocks and 7 steals in 40 minutes of play.
Janisha Wilkerson led Paine with a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards. Tannasia Rhodes added 11 points.
FVSU almost doubled Paine in rebounding 61-49, with FVSU never leading in the game, while Paine gained their largest lead of 15 points with seven second left in the first half.
The Lady Lions outscored the Lady Wildcats 28-22 in the paint, 13-8 on second chance shots. Both team hit 16 points each off turnovers. The Lady Wildcats ran up 16 points to Paine's 4 on fast breaks and 54 points to 42 from bench players.
The Lady Wildcats is back in action on Monday, February 9, as Benedict College come a calling. Game time 6 p.m.
