FVSU LADY WILDCATS DEFEAT PAINE 94-87 IN OVERTIME

FORT VALLEY, GA (January 16, 2017) – Senior forward Shekiya Tarpkins (Social Circle, GA) led four Lady Wildcats (5-9; 4-2) with a double-double in scoring with a game-high 25-points and game-high 14 rebounds as Fort Valley State defeated Paine College (7-10; 4-5) 94-87 in overtime Monday night at the HPE Complex.
 
Tarpklins scored 14-points and grabbed nine rebounds in the first half, while Tania Ward had 14-points for Paine.
 
In the first quarter, Paine took a 4-0 lead, FVSU Nola Carter layup would make the score 2-4. At the 7:45 mark, Daknequa White tied the game at 6 and Briunca Caldwell gave FVSU an 8-6 lead. Tarpklins layup with 2:16 left added to the Lady Wildcats lead 21-16. FVSU went up by eight points twice in the second quarter with Tarpklins 3-pointer making the score 37-29.
 
Paine's Semirla Huggins free throw tied the game again at 42-42, then White's layup and free throw increased FVSU's lead to 62-57. Then, with .22 second remaining on the clock, White's layup would tie the game at 80, sending the game to overtime.
 
In overtime, Ward for Paine made it 82-80, Tarpklins layup then tied the score 82-82 with 4:12 left. Tarpklins free throws increased the score to 89-84 with 1:21 to go. With four seconds on the clock Caldwell made two foul shots to complete the scoring and a win.
 
Tarpklins scored on 10-of-21 baskets, one three, 4-of-7 foul shots, three steals and two blocks. White had 22-points and a game-high five assist, Caldwell added 17-points, eight rebounds and Alicia Franklin added an additional 11-points.
 
Ward led Paine with 23-points and Mikalia Wallace grabbed eight boards.     
  
The Lady Wildcats hit 38-points to Paine's 26 in the paint, 32 to 27 points off turnovers, 21-points to 12 off second changes shots, while both team made 14-points each off fast breaks. Paine got 62 of their points from bench players while FVSU had 21. During the game the teams tied the game 14 times and lead changed nine.
 
Next game: FVSU will host the Lady Tigers of Benedict College on Saturday, January 21 at 1 pm in the HPE Complex.
