ATLANTA, GA (January 26, 2017) – Freshman
Daknequa White posted a game-high 29-points and seven rebounds to lead Fort Valley State to a 73-63 win over Clark Atlanta snapping a two game losing streak Thursday night in Atlanta.
FVSU improves to 6-11 overall and 5-4 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Clark Atlanta drop to 2-6 in the SIAC and 6-11 overall.
FVSU ended the first quarter down 21-20, but got going in the second quarter off a layup and three pointer by White and Layup by senior
Briunca Caldwell and a free throw by freshman
Ashley Clemons for a 28-23 lead. CAU answered with three points of their own and the Lady Wildcats added another six points to end the half up 34-29.
The Lady Wildcats came out strong in the third period, going on a 14-5 run over the first six minutes of the second half for a 48-34 lead. For the rest of the quarter both teams went back and forth with CAU closing the gap 50-42.
With 5:02 left in the game, Naquaisha Rattray's jumper cut FVSU's lead to 57-53. Whites' two free throws gave the Lady Wildcats a 68-58 score with .30 seconds left and a final 73-63 score.
White scored on 6-of-13 shots from the floor, 3-of-5 three pointers, three assist, had three steals and blocked a shot. Seniors
Shekiya Tarpkins added 15 points, 11 rebounds and
Briunca Caldwell with 14 points and nine boards. Freshman
Nola Carter grabbed nine rebounds and
Alexia Green collected six rebounds and six points.
FVSU out rebounds CAU 59-39, while forcing 15 turnovers for CAU to 36 for the Lady Wildcats. FVSU gained their largest lead of 14 points in the third quarter and the Panthers one point advantage came in the first quarter. The teams tied the game once and lead changed twice.
FVSU next game is Saturday on the road against Tuskegee at 1 pm (CST) in Tuskegee.
