FORT VALLEY, GA – The Fort Valley State University (FVSU) Women's Basketball Team earned their first win of the season as they defeated Miles College (MC) 48-43 Monday evening at the HPE Complex on FVSU's campus.
Alicia Franklin led the Lady Wildcats with a game-high 17-points and three steals, while
Nola Carter put together a double-double, 13-points and 11 rebounds.
Amiah Height added a game-high 12 boards and eight points.
Victoria Sutton led the Lady Bears with 14-points, while Jasmine Hollis grabbed nine boards and Amoni Walker added 10-points.
At the 9:37 mark in the fourth quarter, Franklin's 3-pointer cut the lead to 2-points (35-37) and Carter's free throws tied the game at 37-37 with 7:32 left on the clock. Frantishe Tyson's layup made the score 41-37 with 6:17 on the clock, but FVSU's Williams drove to the basket for a layup to cut the lead to 40-41 with 4:19 to go. Carter's two free throws and Height's layup gave FVSU a 44-42 lead with 2:17 remaining. Franklin and Carter's three free throws with just second left sealed the game.
In the first quarter, Wildcats Guard Franklin connected on a 3-pointer at the 9:08 mark, while Miles Victoria Sutton's layup tied the game at 3-3 with 7:41 to go in the first quarter. Height and Franklin made two baskets apiece to increase the score 7-3. Miles Raiana Johnson closed the gap to 5-7 with 3:55 remaining in the quarter. Kaylan West two free throws put the Lady Wildcats back out front 9-8 with 1:59 left. Walker made a layup for Miles to end the quarter with Miles leading by 6 (15-9).
As close as the Lady Wildcats would get in the second quarter would be five-points at the 7:54 and 1:06 marks. Miles increased their lead by 8 three times in the quarter and took a 7-point (24-17) advantage to the locker room.
In the third quarter, Carter cut the lead to 2-points (24-26) with 6:46 left in the quarter. Jasmine Hollis made two free throws to give MC a 10-point (34-24) lead with 4:47 to go. Franklin's two foul shots made the score 32-37 at the end of the third quarter.
FVSU shot just 29.8% (14-47) from the floor, 13.3% (2-15) from behind the arc and turned the ball over 31 times to Miles 27. At the free throw line, FVSU connected on just 52.9% (18-34) of their attempts but outrebounded MC by a 48-44 margin.
The Lady Wildcats will travel to Augusta, GA on January 10, 2018, to play Paine College in a 5:30 contest.
