FORT VALLEY, GA –
Alicia Franklin led all scorers with a game-high 31-points to lead Fort Valley State University (FVSU) (4-20; 4-11) to a 78-73 overtime victory over Paine College (PC) 0-18; 0-12) Saturday evening at the HPE Complex on Fort Valley State's campus.
Franklin sank seven baskets from the field, made four 3-pointers, went 13 of 19 at the free throw line, five boards and had four assists.
Nola Carter added 16-points and five rebounds while
Keaundra Cox had 11-points, five rebounds and dished out a game-high six assists.
Kaylan West came off the bench to lead the team with 11-rebounds.
FVSU outrebounded PC 47-46 while PC outscored the Lady Wildcats 36-28 in the paint, 17-14 off turnovers, 10-7 on second-chance shots and 29-8 on points from the bench.
Keondra Archie led PC with 23-points and 13 rebounds.
The Lady Wildcats made 35.9% (28-78) shots from the floor, 26.2% (6-23) three-pointers and 73.3% (11-15) from the free throw line. PC shot 37.1% from the field, 28.6% (6-21) from behind the arc and hit 70% (26-37) from the foul line.
FVSU's largest lead of 13-points came at the 3:27 mark in the second quarter, while the Lady Lions picked up a 2-points advantage in the fourth quarter with 3:16 remaining.
The Lady Wildcats held a 38-28 lead at intermission, but PC came back in the fourth quarter for the tie at 48 with 4:39 left. Both teams would tie the game five more times until the score was 61-61 with 15-second to go. With nine seconds left, Franklin made two free throws to give FVSU a 63-61 lead. PC tied the game at 63-63 with two seconds left to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, the traded baskets until Height's layup put the Lady Wildcats up for good 71-70 with 1:36 left. Franklin took over from there and made several free throws to seal the game.
FVSU's next home game is Homecoming on Saturday, January 10
th at 6 p.m. as Albany State University comes to The Valley.
