Wildcats Score Final 10 Points, Prevail over Golden Dragons

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats could not have opened 2019 much better. Fort Valley State scored the final 10 points in the last 1:39 of the game and prevailed over Lane College, 50-44, Wednesday afternoon in women's basketball.

Trailing 44-40 following a Golden Dragons (4-11/3-3 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) 3-pointer, Alicia Franklin and Kaylin West each converted a pair of Wildcats (2-11/2-4 SIAC) free throws 17 seconds apart to tie the contest at 44 with 1:11 remaining. A mid-court steal and driving Nyah Dismukes layup put FVSU ahead for good with 48 seconds left. Franklin and Nola Carter added four more foul shots in the last 41 seconds for the six-point winning home margin.

In the low-scoring contest, Franklin finished the day with a team-high 12 points, including a perfect 6 for 6 at the foul line to go with four rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Carter added a double-double in the FVSU effort with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while she handed out five helpers, swiped two passes and swatted two shots. Torri Myers contributed seven points and nine caroms, while Amiah Height had seven points and six rebounds off the bench.

Breaunna Burks was Lane's only double figure scorer with 10 points.

After the Golden Dragons led 10-9 with one quarter elapsed, the Wildcats tied the game at 18-18 on a West layup and took a one-point, 19-18, intermission lead on one Myers free throw.

FVSU enjoyed its largest lead to that point, 33-28, on one Jah'ne Brown free throw with 2:32 to go in the third period. Lane answered with the next nine points spilling into the fourth quarter for a 37-33 advantage.

The Wildcats' final margin of six points was the largest by either team as both squads led by as many as five points before the final tally.

FVSU go on the road for the first time in 2019 next Monday, Jan. 7, for a 1 p.m. game at Spring Hill.
