Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Bears Fend off Wildcats

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats battled back from a rocky first quarter, but they could not grab the Monday evening lead. Miles College saw its lead cut to a single point by Fort Valley State, but it fended off the home team in the final minutes for the 46-37 women's basketball victory.

After pushing the middle 20 minutes, the Wildcats (3-15) cut the deficit to a point, 36-35, with 6:30 left on a pair of Camille Saunders foul shots. The Bears (10-5), though, put 10 of the final 12 points on the scoreboard for the winning margin.

Saunders and Torri Myers led FVSU with nine points apiece to go with five and four rebounds. Jah'ne Brown chipped in seven points off the bench.

The Wildcats had a hard time from the field as they made only 10 of 53 attempts, while the Bears won the rebounding battle, 52-33.

Victoria Sutton led all scorers with 14 points for Miles.

FVSU had a tough opening as Miles claimed the opening frame, 11-1, with only a home Alicia Franklin free throw 7:10 into the night to show.

The Wildcats won the next two periods, 13-11 and 15-12, to give themselves a chance to win in the final 6:30.

FVSU stays at home where it next hosts Paine College on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 26, in a 1 p.m. contest.
