FVSU Upset Bid Falls Short Against SIAC Leader Benedict

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats clawed all night, but they fell just short of grabbing the lead. Alicia Franklin twice in just over a minute span pulled Fort Valley State within a point, but the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leader Benedict College had enough to stave off the upset bid, 73-61, Monday night.

The Wildcats (4-16/4-8 SIAC) saw Franklin drain a 3-pointer to make it 58-57, with 7:08 left and again make it a one-point game, 60-59, on an ensuing jumper in the lane with 5:50 to go. The Tigers (16-4/11-0 SIAC) showed their might with the next seven points for the late separation and win.

Franklin finished the night with a FVSU-high 20 points, including four treys. Nola Carter added 13 points on 4 of 8 attempts to go with five rebounds and a pair of assists. Alex Booker registered her freshman season-high of 13 points on 5 of 10 shots off the bench and grabbed seven boards. Fellow first-year player
Torri Myers added six points and nine rebounds.

Ay'Anna Bey produced top Tiger honors with 17 points and seven rebounds.

Benedict was able to limit FVSU's shot opportunities with a 64-43 rebound advantage despite making three more turnovers, 22-19.

The Wildcats ran off an 11-2 run midway through the first period and opened a 13-7 lead. Benedict answered back from there and turned the tide with the next 18 points that continued from the end of the first through the first 4:15 of the second quarter and 25-13 lead.

Down by nine at
half, FVSU trailed by as many as 11 points twice in the third period, 41-30 and again 51-40, and cut it down to five, 53-48, at the end of three frames.

FVSU is now off until this Saturday, Feb. 2, for the Homecoming battle against Clark Atlanta starting at 1 p.m.
