11/24/2019 5:42:00 PM

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – For the second this early season, the Wildcats moved up in competition. Fort Valley State had a solid start, but NCAA Division I Jacksonville State rebounded and prevailed, 87-65, in the women's basketball exhibition game on Sunday.

Tied at 4, Nikki Culbreath hit a jumper, before Alicia Franklin stole the ball and popped a trey for a FVSU 9-7 edge with 5:20 left in the first frame. The Gamecocks ran off the next nine points and 18 of the final 21 first-quarter points for a 25-12 lead. Two Wildcats 3-point plays by Franklin and Nyah Dismukes pulled the visitors to within seven, 27-20, with just under eight minutes in the second quarter, before JSU netted the next 13 tallies and went on for the eventual win.

Torri Myers paced the Wildcats with 16 points on 7-for-15 attempts and two 3-pointers. Nola Carter added 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and four steals. Franklin chipped in nine points, all in the first half. Dismukes had five points and four assists, while Taziha Fanning pulled down seven rebounds.

Jacksonville State received 16 points from both Destiney Elliott and Kiana Johnson.

FVSU has the next week off from action until it hosts Lane College on Saturday, Nov. 30, in a 1 p.m. contest.
