LeMoyne-Owen Uses Strong Finish to Clip FVSU Women’s Basketball

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – A strong ending proved to more than equal a good beginning in determining the Wildcats fate Thursday night. Fort Valley State saw its solid first quarter be outdone by LeMoyne-Owen College's fourth frame for the visitors' 72-68 women's basketball victory.
 
The Wildcats (5-7/2-2 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) jumped out to a big 21-7 advantage in the opening 10 minutes. The Magicians (5-4/2-2 SIAC West) cut an 18-point deficit to nine in the final 3:41 of the first half and erased the margin from the opening fourth-quarter moments for the final-minute win.
 
Nola Carter keeps inching closer to triple-double game as she led FVSU withg 21 points on 9-for-15 shooting, 16 rebounds and seven assists to go with two blocks and two steals.
 
Taziha Fanning added 13 points and six boards, while Torri Myers had 10 points and six caroms. Nikki Culbreath chipped in 11 points, including a pair of treys, and two assists off the bench.
 
Lamontazia Blair and Amil Mitchell combined for 46 points and 20 rebounds. Patrisha Lollis hauled in 14 rebounds and 12 of LeMoyne-Owens' 29 team offensive rebounds.
 
FVSU netted the opening six points and 13 of the first 15 points in the game. After leading by as many as 20 points, 34-14, with 2:40 before halftime, the Magicians went on a 13-2 flurry to end the second period.
 
After a Myers layup for the home team to make it, 54-47, with 7:41 on the clock, LeMoyne-Owen rattled off the next seven points to tie the contest. Tied for a fifth time in the fourth quarter, 64-64, with 1:03 left, a second of two free throws and a layup gave the Magicians the lead for good with 50 seconds.
 
FVSU completes its December schedule with a final home game on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 21, against Miles College starting at 1 p.m.
