Wildcats 4th-Quarter Run Pushes Badgers, But Not Enough

MOBILE, Ala. – The Wildcats hole was a little too deep to get out of Wednesday night. Trailing by 16 points, Fort Valley State came to life with a 12-0 run in less than two minutes to pull within six points, but Spring Hill College had enough in the final moments for the 82-71 victory.

After Jada Sleet made a 3-point play and a second layup, Nikki Culbreath and Jah'ne Brown followed with back-to-back triples. Sleet added one final free throw as the Wildcats (8-10/4-5 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) saw the deficit shrink to six, 74-68, with 1:21 remaining. The Badgers (6-12/5-4 SIAC West), though, connected on all four free throws in two trips to the charity stripe in the next 14 seconds and helped the home team hold on.

For the third game in a row, Taziha Fanning led the FVSU scorers with 15 points on 6-of-8 attempts to go with nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Sleet added 12 points on 5-for-7 from the floor. Brown and Nola Carter chipped in 11 points apiece, while Culbreath and Alicia Franklin had eight tallies each.

Center Tiffany Valentine dumped in 16 points for the Badgers as one of six players in double figures. Spring Hill made over 61% of its shots (30 of 49) and outrebound the visitors, 40-35.

Spring Hill hit the game's first three shots for the opening six points and went out to a 9-2 lead in the beginning 4:27. The Badgers extended the margin to 13 points, 21-8, by the end of the first quarter.

The Wildcats did not get closer than five points after a bucket with 3:32 in the first frame made it 11-6.

FVSU stays on the road for a Saturday night, Jan. 26th, contest at Albany State. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
