2/18/2020 1:39:00 PM

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wildcats' inside presence has been greatly improved and one of the freshman forwards is a big part of the reason. Fort Valley State's Taziha Fanning pulled down the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Newcomer of the Week Award for her efforts helping the team go 2-0 last week.

The first-year Fanning averaged nearly a double-double at 9.5 points and 15.0 rebounds per contest to go with 1.5 assists, two blocks and two steals in FVSU's wins, which the team has now posted the most wins of 13 and first time over .500 (13-11) in February in six years.

Starting off last week against Paine College in a 64-58 final, Fanning recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 rebounds. She also handed out two assists, blocked a shot and swiped a pass. The Whitesville, Ga., product had four points and nine of her rebounds in the game-deciding second half.

Against rival Albany State last Saturday night of a 48-38 win, the 6-0 freshman showed her glass presence again. After 17 rebounds in the first meeting with the Golden Rams, Fanning bettered the effort with 19 boards, seven on the offensive side, over the weekend and her efforts helped the Wildcats dominate in the area, 62-37. She also scored nine tallies to go with three blocks and three steals. Fanning had equal production in each half with five points and nine rebounds in the first 20 minutes and four points and 10 rebounds in the second half.

On the season, Fanning leads the team at 8.8 rebounds per night and third in scoring at 8.7 points. She also leads FVSU with a .519 field goal percentage (68 of 131) and averages more than a block at 1.1 (25 total).

With her rebounding help, FVSU has went from a -9.9 rebound margin a year ago to a +4.0 margin in 24 games this campaign.

Fanning and FVSU return to action this Saturday, Feb. 22, afternoon in a 1 p.m. contest at Savannah State.
