Wildcats Suffer Tough Ending on ‘Senior Night’ Versus Panthers

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats had the ideal ending for 'Senior Night' and saw it slip away. Fort Valley State suffered a tough ending and dropped a tight, 59-58, women's basketball decision to Clark Atlanta on Monday evening.

Trailing 59-57, FVSU (13-13/9-8 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) had the scenario laid out to tie or take the lead with 4.9 seconds left. After a Panthers (8-18/6-11 SIAC East) technical foul and personal foul gave four free throws, the Wildcats, though, only converted 1-of-4 attempts to make it 59-58. The home team had one last chance where Nola Carter's 3-point attempt saw one official call a foul and then get overruled to award Clark Atlanta the victory.

Taziha Fanning powered the Wildcats effort with 12 points on 6-for-11 tries and a season-best 21 rebounds and two blocked shots. Nikki Culbreath chipped in 12 tallies herself with a pair of treys. Jada Sleet added 10 points, while Jah'ne Brown had nine.

FVSU celebrated six senior players – Carter, Alicia Franklin, Amiah Height, Alexia Green, Jalin Moye and Ashley Bearden, who have helped the team win more games this year than the last two seasons combined.

Reyana Miller led all scorers with 20 points for the Panthers and surpassed 1,000 points in her career.

FVSU connected on only 10-of-21 free throw attempts in the game, while it did dominate the glass by a 56-37 margin.

FVSU will now wait until it plays in next week's SIAC Tournament. The Wildcats enter the post season as the third seed in the SIAC East after being picked last in sixth place in the preseason. FVSU will take to the court at 4:45 p.m. next Tuesday, March 3, against the SIAC West's sixth seed.
