Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Wildcats Give Their All, No. 12 Tigers Too Tough in End in SIAC Quarterfinals

ROCK HILL, SC – The Wildcats left everything on the court Wednesday afternoon. Fort Valley State kept coming and kept coming in its SIAC Women's Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals, but No. 12 Savannah State proved too tough in the end of the 91-64 final tally.

Early on in the game, Torri Myers was willing FVSU (9-15) in the contest. In fact, the junior forward's 14 first-half points had her team within two, 19-17, with 1:03 in the first quarter, but it was two big runs to spell the Tigers prevailing story. After a Kyndall Thomas running jumper in the lane pulled the Wildcats within 33-27 in the second period, the Tigers finished the first half on 19-8 run and 52-35 half score.

FVSU was not done and cut the margin down to 13 points twice in the fourth quarter – a Myers layup (70-57 at 9:30) and a Ja'Meisha Williams 3-pointer (75-62 at 7:35). Savannah State showed why it had the top 12 national ranking with a 14-0 game-clinching run following the Williams trey to put the game away.

Myers hit 12 of 24 attempts for a game-best 27 points, including 14 in the first half, to go with seven rebounds and two assists. Ja'Nya Ferguson was tough inside for FVSU with a double-double of 15 points (6 of 9 shooting and 2 for 2 from long-range) and 12 rebounds. The two inside Wildcat players help the team pull down 19 offensive rebounds in the game.

Le'Andrrea Gillis led four double-figure scorers of Savannah State with 14 points.
