SAVANNAH, Ga. – After an encouraging Wednesday night victory, the Wildcats were put to the test against the Division's best Saturday afternoon. Fort Valley State led the opening five minutes and battled back to within striking distance late, but Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East Division-leading Savannah State took away the 85-69 women's basketball win.

Following an opening layup by Torri Myers, Shekinah Rachel put in the next three buckets of the day as FVSU (3-8/3-5 SIAC East) led 8-6 with 4:07 into the contest. The host Lady Tigers (10-3/6-2 SIAC East) ran off the game's next 16 of 18 points and led the rest of the day.

Down 77-57 with 3:16 in the contest, the Wildcats netted eight points in a row to cut the margin to 12, 77-65, capped by a Rachel 3-point play. FVSU ran out of time to get any closer in the final moments.

Rachel posted season-best with 23 points on 10 of 17 attempts to go with five rebounds, two steals, an assist and one block. Diamond Jones made 8 of 11 free throws as part of her 18-point day.

Myers added nine points, six boards, two assists and a pair of blocked shots, while Ja'Nya Ferguson had seven points and seven rebounds.

Bria Gibbs and Amari Heard paced Savannah State with 19 and 18 points apiece.

FVSU returns to action on Monday evening, Jan. 9, in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Edward Waters University in Jacksonville, Fla.
