Georgia College Edges FVSU in Final Minute

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats and Bobcats traded strong halves and saw the result come down to the final minute. After Shekinah Rachel gave Fort Valley State a one-point lead with 1:28, Georgia College found the answer with a 3-pointer just over a minute later and held on for the 55-52 women's basketball victory.
 
Heading into the final 10 minutes with a four-point lead, FVSU fell behind by a point for the first time all second-half with 4:03 to go, 49-48. Aaniyah Allen put the Wildcats back on top, 50-49, with a runner in the lane at 3:09 until the Bobcats slipped back ahead, 51-50, at 1:48 leading into Rachel's make 20 seconds later. Down 54-52 at 16 seconds left, FVSU's final chance resulted in a turnover swiped by Georgia College with seven seconds on the clock.
 
Rachel produced one of her best games as a Wildcat with 19 points on 8 of 16 shooting and made all three free throws to go with 16 rebounds, two assists, a block and two steals. Aaniyah Allen connected on 6 of 7 from the floor with a pair of treys for 16 points and four steals. Taylor Addison and Caly Cage chipped in six points apiece.
 
Hannah Cail led all scorers with 22 points, including 6 of 12 from 3-point range for the Bobcats.
 
Following a tight 17-14 first quarter led by the home team, FVSU had its was in the second frame. The Wildcats won the second 10 minutes by a 19-5 margin to take a 36-19 advantage to intermission.
 
Georgia College regrouped and was able to get back into the contest with a 19-8 third quarter in its favor and added the 17-8 edge in the fourth for the 3-point win.
 
FVSU will have four days off until it start SIAC play and hosts Tuskegee University on Saturday, Nov. 25, in a 1 p.m. tip.
