Wildcats Third Upset Bid Falls Short, Lady Bears Take SIAC Quarterfinal

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Wildcats magic ran out on Thursday afternoon after a solid opening frame. Leading after a quarter, Fort Valley State saw the tide turn from there and its third upset bid fell short as Miles College took the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Quarterfinal matchup, 57-33.

Nikki Culbreath drained the game's opening points on a 3-pointer only 47 seconds into the afternoon. Miles struck back and led 8-7 midway through the first before FVSU (8-17) ran off the next six points capped by a Torri Myers jumper for a 14-7 lead at 2:28 in the frame. The Myers shot, though, turned out to be the Wildcats last bucket until she hit her next one with 36 left in the second period to break up the key Lady Bears' run of the game, 18-0, over a 11:52 stretch.

FVSU cut the deficit down to eight points, 33-25, on a pair of Culbreath free throws with 5:32 left in the third frame. Miles answered with a 3-point play on the other end and the underdogs could not regain the momentum.

The trio of Wildcat seniors – Myers, Diamond Jones and Shekinah Rachel – all finished with six points apiece in their final FVSU games. Rachel pulled down seven rebounds and Myers had four with two blocked shots, while Jones handed out three assists. Culbreath chipped in five points.
