JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Wildcats took the second 20 minutes and set its most wins in over a decade. Fort Valley State reversed its fortunes as it outscored Edward Waters by 10 points in the second half and took away a 64-57 women's basketball victory.
After scoring the final four points of the second quarter, Edward Waters held a 28-25 halftime lead. FVSU reversed the margin in its favor by the end of the third frame (43-39), but it took a key run with 6:55 to play for the win. Tied at 46-46, the Wildcats ran off the next 12 unanswered tallies capped by a Cori Barnes triple with 3:28 on the clock to make it 58-46. The Tigers cut it down to four points, 61-57, but only 10 seconds remained at that time and the visitors took away the win.
With the victory, FVSU ran its season record to 14-9 for the program's most wins in a season in 11 years. The Wildcats last won at least 14 games came during the 2012-13 campaign where it went 15-13, the team's last winning season.
The trio of Shekinah Rachel, Aaniyah Allen and Ayani Cockrell combined for 42 of the team's 64 points on the afternoon. Rachel led with 15 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double along with two blocks, two steals and an assist. Allen netted 14 points of her own to go with seven rebounds, seven assists and a pair of steals. Cockrell chipped in 13 points, four steals and three boards.
Coming off the Wildcat bench, Ace Stevenson had a key nine points on 4 of 7 shooting and two steals. Barnes downed two treys for six points and Caly Cage contributed five points.
Imani Harris led the Tigers with 15 points.
Down 9-4 early, FVSU netted the next six points for its first lead of 10-9 on a Stevenson 3-point play (10-9) at 4:11 in the opening period. Allen pushed the lead to four points, 15-11, before a home 3-pointer took the first-quarter score to 15-14.
Leading 23-22 on a Cage running hook in the lane, Edward Waters turned the score in its favor with six of the final eight points and a 28-25 edge.
The Wildcats scored the first six points of the third period with four coming from Allen to go in front, 31-28. The lead swung back-and-forth until a Barnes trey and two Rachel free throws made it 43-39.
FVSU completes its regular season where it will travel to the SIAC East-leader Savannah State in a Monday evening (Feb. 26) clash tipping at 5:30 p.m.
