MOBILE, Ala. – Fort Valley State University Women's Basketball (0-6, 0-5 SIAC) came up short in a 65-56 road decision at Spring Hill College (4-2, 2-1 SIAC) Thursday evening.
Spring Hill edged FVSU 12-11 in the opening quarter. The Wildcats struck first with a
Marley Bell jumper for a 2-0 lead. The Badgers answered and took their first lead at 3-2 before FVSU regained the advantage at 9-7 on a
Haneefat Adanijo layup. A late SHC three-pointer closed the quarter and put the Badgers ahead 12-11.
Bell opened the second quarter with a three to swing the lead back to the Wildcats, 14-12. A pair of SHC free throws tied the game at 14-14, and another at the line pushed the Badgers back in front. Spring Hill extended its momentum the rest of the half, taking a 25-17 lead into the break.
SHC made three straight baskets to start the third quarter to stretch the margin to 32-17. The teams traded points throughout the period, and FVSU cut the deficit to single digits heading into the fourth, trailing 44-35.
Spring Hill began the fourth with three straight buckets, but the Wildcats responded with a strong scoring surge, eventually taking a 56-55 lead. However, FVSU was held scoreless the rest of the way as the Badgers closed the game on a 9-0 run to seal the 65-56 final.
Aaniyah Allen led all Wildcats with 22 points, shooting 44% from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line.
Tiana Gongora followed with nine points, shooting 50% from the floor and 60% from three.
Makayla Arnold paced FVSU on the boards with seven rebounds, while Allen added five.
The Wildcats return to action on the road at Kentucky State University on Thursday, Dec. 11 for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
