Tigers Get Past Wildcats Late

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – A tough ending caught the Wildcats on Tuesday evening. Benedict College won the first five minutes of the fourth quarter and was able to get past Fort Valley State, 58-48, in women's hoops.

After Ace Stevenson hit the final shot of the third frame, FVSU had the momentum going into the final 10 minutes and trailed, 34-30. Benedict, though, doubled up the home team, 14-7, in the first five minutes of the fourth period for a 48-37 advantage. The Wildcats pulled back to within seven, 48-41, with 2:39 remaining, but they could get no closer.

With the win, the Tigers (9-15/7-10 SIAC East) took both of the contests of the season series after they edged the Wildcats (8-15/4-12 SIAC East) by a 74-72 final on Jan. 18 in Columbia.

On the night, Kimora Wade made 4 of her 8 field goals for a team-high 12 points and a double-double with 10 rebounds. Aaniyah Allen dropped a 3-pointer as part of her 11 points, three rebounds and two assists.

Cori Barnes connected on a pair of triples for seven points, while Camryn Oneill chipped in five points, four assist and a pair of rebounds.

Off the bench, Arieonna Booker added five rebounds and four points. Makayla Arnold grabbed five rebounds and Ja'Nya Ferguson had four.

Kayla Horton led Benedict with 13 points.

After the visitors led 13-12 with one quarter in the books, FVSU took its first lead right away with a pair of Allen free throws. The Wildcats enjoyed two more leads on a Booker jump shot, 16-14, and then a Barnes 3-pointer for a 19-17 edge with 2:59 before half.

Deadlocked at 21-21 for intermission, Benedict turned the score into a seven-point lead, 30-23, in the first 5:27.

FVSU will complete its home schedule this Saturday afternoon, Aug. 22, in a 1 p.m. contest against Albany State for Winter Homecoming in The Valley.
