ALBANY, Ga.- Fort Valley State University Women's Basketball (4-16, 4-14 SIAC) take hard fought 67-61 loss on the road at Albany State University (11-7, 10-7 SIAC). Saturday afternoon.
Fort Valley State struck first as
India McIntosh opened the scoring with a layup in the paint, assisted by
Grace East, giving the Wildcats an early 2–0 lead. The Wildcats continued to attack inside, with
Reya Johnson and
Aaniyah Allen helping FVSU build a 10–6 advantage midway through the opening period. Albany State responded with a late run, briefly taking its first lead at 12–10. Fort Valley State answered behind fast-break points from Allen and continued defensive pressure, but Albany State closed the opening frame on a surge to take a 17–13 lead.
Albany State extended its lead early in the second quarter, pushing the margin to double digits. Fort Valley State responded with strong efforts on both ends, as
Kimora Wade scored on a tip-in and Allen added points at the free-throw line to cut into the deficit. Wade and McIntosh sparked transition opportunities, helping the Wildcats trim the margin to 33–23 late in the half. Despite the push, Albany State answered down the stretch and carried a 37–26 advantage into halftime.
The Wildcats came out of the break with renewed energy, as Wade scored inside and Allen knocked down a three-pointer to pull Fort Valley State within six at 39–33.
Madisyn Ogburn later connected from beyond the arc, keeping the Wildcats within striking distance. Albany State countered with timely baskets to maintain control, but Fort Valley State continued to chip away behind scoring from Johnson and consistent rebounding from McIntosh. Albany State held a 53–42 edge heading into the final period.
Fort Valley State made its strongest push in the closing minutes, opening the quarter with defensive stops and fast-break finishes from Allen and
Marley Bell to cut the deficit to 55–48. Allen continued to lead the charge, scoring multiple times in transition to bring the Wildcats within four at 55–51.
Kimora Wade added key baskets down the stretch, including a pair of fast-break layups in the final minute that cut the margin to 63–61. Despite the late rally, Albany State sealed the game at the free-throw line, handing Fort Valley State a 67–61 decision.
Allen led the scoring effort with 27 points on 10 made field goals and a 6-for-9 performance from the free-throw line, while also pacing the Wildcats with seven steals. Wade added 17 points, shooting 60 percent from the floor and going 5-for-8 from the charity stripe. McIntosh led the rebounding effort with 12 boards while also contributing seven points.
The Wildcats return to action on Monday, February 2, when they travel to Kentucky State University for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
