Wildcats Come Up Short in Jackson

JACKSON, Tn. – Fort Valley State University Women's Basketball (5–20, 5–18 SIAC) fell in a tough battle at Lane College (17-5, 16-5 SIAC) Thursday evening, 63-50.

Lane College opened the contest with a 8-0 run against Fort Valley, but a good layup by Kimora Wade would end the Dragons' scoring streak making the score 8-2. The Wildcats and the Dragons would rally over the next several minutes and eventually close the first quarter with FVSU trailing 16-9.

The Dragons started the second quarter adding four points making the score 20-9; Wade makes another layup followed by a made free throw from teammate Madisyn Ogburn  puts the Wildcats back in the game with a score of 20-12. Lane outscored Fort Valley 7-1 over a four minute span, but Aaniyah Allen drove in the paint for a good layup. The teams go back and forth for the remainder of the second quarter with FVSU outscoring Lane 6-4 and going into halftime with a score of 31-21.

Fort Valley opens the third quarter with Wade contracting a foul and adding a free throw to the Wildcats score making it a nine-point game, 31-22. A fastbreak jumper from Allen, three-pointer from Wade, and good layup from India McIntosh brought the Wildcats back within seven points of the Dragons, 36-29. Julia Baker drove to the basket, adding two to the Wildcats' board. Wade would add a point as the third quarter ends making the score 46-32.

Ogburn starts the fourth quarter strong for the Wildcats with a three-pointer assisted by Marley Bell. Bell, Allen, and Baker would then work together and add nine points bringing the score to 61-44.  Jewell Harwell contributed to the team's total with two driving layups made. Although the Wildcats outscored the Dragons in the quarter, it wasn't enough to keep Lane from taking home the victory 63-50.

Kimora Wade led the way with 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field and 4-for-8 at the free-throw line. Allen added 12 points on 6-for-16 shooting, while Bell led the team with seven rebounds.

The Wildcats return to action on the road at LeMoyne-Owen College Saturday, February 21, 3 p.m. CT.
