The Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) were eliminated from the 78th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament today after a 59-55 loss to the Panthers of Claflin University. The first round match up was played at Clark Atlanta University's Epps Gymnasium.
The game's first 20 minutes proved to be disastrous for the Wildcats. Their first half scoring output was their lowest of the season as they trailed the Panthers 26-13 at halftime. The 13-point halftime deficit was not the largest. At one point during the half, the Wildcats trailed by as many as 21 points.
With such a disappointing start, most teams would have folded the tent and simply gone through the motions in the second half. Not the Wildcats! They chose to fight!
In the second half, FVSU rallied and tied the game on three different occasions. In fact, the outcome of the game was not decided until the last minute.
The loss concludes the 2010-11 season for the Wildcats who finished with an 8-21 overall record and an 8-17 conference mark. Jeremy Sledge led the Wildcats in scoring with 13 points. Detrius McCall, Brandon Davey, and Nigel Domineck had eight points each.
