Leading by as many as 20 points in their match-up on January 17th, the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) never expected to receive the type scare that the Thorobrettes of Kentucky State University (KSU) gave them during the game. Through an impressive second half rally, the Thorobrettes snatched the lead away from the Lady Wildcats with just seconds remaining, 62-61. In what started out as an apparent easy win, FVSU now faced a disappointing loss. However, a steal and a lay-up by freshman
Jayme Gilbert with twelve seconds left pulled the Lady Wildcats from the brink of defeat and gave them a 63-62 win.
The dramatic win raised the Lady Wildcats overall record to 11-4 and increased their conference mark to 9-2. Played in the Exum Center on the KSU campus, each team had three players to score in double figures. For the Lady Wildcats, senior
Jasmine Birdsong finished with 15 points while
Dominique Collier added 12 points and Gilbert contributed 11 points. KSU was led by Jasmine Davis with 21 points; Cortney Matthewis had 12 points; and Shayla Moore finished with 10 points.
The Lady Wildcats return to action on Thursday, January 19th at 4 p.m. (cst) when they travel to Jackson, TN for a conference game with the Lady Dragons of Lane College.
