Lady Wildcats end road trip with win over Lady Dragons

By: FVSU Office of Sports Information
The Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) concluded their six game road trip with a 61-47 win over the Lady Dragons of Lane College on January 19th in the J.F. Lane Arena in Jackson, TN. The win was the 10th conference victory this season for the Lady Wildcats who raised their season mark to 12-4 overall.

It was a very sluggish start for the Lady Wildcats who made only seven baskets in the game's first 20 minutes. Fortunately, the Lady Dragons were even more lethargic. Lane made just six baskets in the first half. Leading 22-21 at the intermission, FVSU was able to re-group at halftime and generated a more productive second half.

Sparked by the play of freshman Jayme Gilbert, the Lady Wildcats shot 50% (13 of 26) from the floor in the second half.  With just three points before the break, Gilbert had 20 second half points to lead the Lady Wildcat surge. Senior Jasmine Birdsong got 10 of her 15 points in the final half as well. FVSU outscored Lane 39 to 26 in the second half to hand the Lady Dragons their 11th straight loss of the season.

The Lady Wildcats will begin an eight game home stand on January 24th when they host the Lady Bears of Miles College in the HPE Complex at 6 p.m. Admission to the conference contest is free of charge.
