Tonight's Lady Wildcats basketball game pitted two teams traveling in opposite directions. The current journey for the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) included a 7-2 overall record and an undefeated conference mark of 5-0. For the Lady Dragon of Lane College, so far, it has been a long and winding road. In their first five tries, the Lady Dragons had yet to find the access ramp leading to a win. So as the paths of these teams intersected in HPE Arena tonight on the FVSU campus tonight, the only question that remained was which team would continue on their present course?
After the game's first 10:36, the answer to that question was becoming as clear as a country highway during Sunday morning church service. After 10 minutes of play, the Lady Dragons had yet to score a basket and had committed 13 turnovers. The early 19-0 lead by the Lady Wildcats was a positive road sign that tonight's game would not be a major detour for FVSU. At halftime, the Lady Dragons had more turnovers than points and FVSU, already deep into a substitution pattern, appeared to be on cruise control with a 35-16 lead.
After stretching their collective legs at intermission, the Lady Wildcats refused to take their feet off the petal in the second half. With 12:24 left, the FVSU lead was an even 20 points, 48-28. At the 9:29 mark, the lead grew to 56-34.
As the game continued, every player on the FVSU roster had an opportunity to play. And regardless of the combination on the floor, the result was still the same. Relentless defense and up tempo offense were the keys to the Lady Wildcats navigating their way to their ultimate destination; another win. As both teams finally shifted into park, the Lady Wildcats came away with a 76-53 victory.
A host of Lady Wildcats scored in double figures in tonight's game including
Jasmine Birdsong who finished with 11 points;
Carmenonique Dawson who finished with 10 points; and reservists
Stephanie Brownlee who also added 10 points.
Now at 8-2 overall and 6-0 in the SIAC, the journey for the Lady Wildcats continues on Saturday, January 7
th, when they travel to Albany, Georgia for a conference match-up with the Lady Rams of Albany State University. Tip-off for the game is set for 6 p.m.
