Lady Wildcats struggle but overcome Lady Barons

By: FVSU Office of Sports Information

After an 11-day lay-off, the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (FVSU) returned to basketball action on Saturday, Dec. 15th against the Lady Barons of Brewton Parker College (BPC).  Played on the road, FVSU entered the game with a 2-2 overall record.  The non-conference match up against BPC was the fifth consecutive inter-conference game for FVSU this season.

In the game's first 12 minutes, the Lady Barons held a 16-9 lead.  Poor perimeter shooting plagued the Lady Wildcats in the early stages of the game, an apparent result of the extended lay-off. With 4:50 left in the half, the BPC lead held, 19-12.

However, successive steals on defense swung the momentum in FVSU's favor. With 2:33 left, the BPC lead was cut to 21-19. The two point edge held until nine seconds left in the half when the Lady Wildcats got a steal and basket by Shytina Harley to tie the game at 21 each to end a very sluggish first half.

In the game's first 20 minutes, the Lady Wildcats made only six of 36 shot attempts for a 16% conversion rate while BPC made nine of 29 shots (31%).

After the intermission, the Lady Wildcats jumped out to a four point lead (27-23).  At the 14 minute mark the Lady Wildcat lead increased to 36-30. Minutes later, the Lady Baron reclaimed the lead, 38-36. After a torrid pace forced a time out with 8:13 remaining, FVSU was back on top, 43-42. With 4:31 left, the Lady Wildcat lead grew to 50-46.

Over the next four minutes, while the Lady Barons had several scoring opportunities, they were held to just one more basket as the Lady Wildcats held on for a 54-52 win.

FVSU was led in scoring by Shytina Harley who finished with 18 points.  Carmenonique Dawson added nine points.

The win brings the Lady Wildcat record to 3-2 on the season as they prepare to host Florida Institute of Technology on Wednesday, December 19th at 3 p.m. in the HPE Complex on the FVSU campus.

The win was also the 620th in the career of Head Coach Lonnie Bartley. He needs just four more to become the winningest head coach in the history of HBCU Women's Basketball.
