Nigel Domineck (Stone Mountain, GA) scored 21 points to lead the Fort Valley State University Wildcats basketball team over Concordia-Selma College in a buzzer beater 80-79 in the Paine College HBCU Classic in Augusta, GA.
FVSU improves its overall record to 2-3, while Concordia-Selma drops to 7-3.
The Wildcats went to the locker room up by 9 points (40-31) over the Hornets. Tavin Cummings layup in the first 13-minutes of the game gave Concordia-Selma their largest lead of the half with 7 points. Senior point guard
Anthony Bell (Detroit, MI) two free throws with 10:35 remaining before the half tied the game at 17-17. Then, with 4:55 left Augusta's hometown boy senior guard
Joshuah Davis sank a 3-pointer to give the Wildcats a 30-22 advantage. At the 1:12 mark, sophomore guard
LeRoy Broner (Brunswick, GA) made a layup giving FVSU a 40-31 lead at halftime.
The Wildcats scored on 14-of-38 shooting in the first half and 9-of-16 free throws and Concordia-Selma hit 10-of-30 shots from the floor, while making 10-of-12 foul shots.
Senior forward
Brandon Davey (Warner Robins, GA) started the second half off with a 3-pointer to give FVSU its largest lead 57-38, but Concordia-Selma chipped away at the lead, Tevin Bettis sank a 3-pointer with .43 seconds left to close the gap at 80-79.
For the game, FVSU hit 29-of-71 (40.8%) shots from the floor, 6-of-23 (26.1%) 3-pointers and 50% (16-of-32) on free throws. Concordia-Selma shot 44.8% (26-of-58) from the field, made 5-of-16 (31.3%) trays and 22-of-29 (75.9%) at the foul line.
In the paint FVSU scored 40 points to Concordia-Selma 38, scored 18-to-17 points off turnovers, made 20-to-10 points off second chance shots, 10-to-6 points on fast breaks, but Concordia-Selma outscored FVSU 37-to-27 from players scoring off the bench.
Domineck scored on 10-of-12 field goal shots, went 1-of-2 at the line, had 4 rebounds and 3 steals, while Davis added 15 points, hit 6-of-8 free throws, along with 6 steals. Davey had a double-double with 12 rebounds and 12 points and Bell dished out a game-high 6 assist.
Harry Cross scored a game-high 22 points and Dwight Waddell had 7 rebounds to lead Concordia-Selma .
The Wildcats next game is Saturday, November 23 at 2 p.m. against Talladega College in the Paine College HBCU Classic in Augusta, GA.
