WILDCATS MOVE INTO FIRST PLACE IN THE SIAC WITH LEMOYNE-OWEN WIN

Box Score MEMPHIS, TN (January 16, 2014) – The Fort Valley State University Wildcats move into first place in the SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) Eastern Division with a 10-5; 6-0 record with the win over the Magicians of LeMoyne-Owen College 85-75 Thursday night, January 16 in Memphis at Bruce-Johnson Hall.

FVSU led at halftime 48-43 on the back of 52.9 percent shooting, hitting 43.8 percent in 3-pointers and making a hot 83.3 percent at the free throw line. LOC hit 52.9 percent from the floor, 44.4 percent in threes and 42.9 percent at the foul line. For the game, the Wildcats made 31-of-57 shots from the field for 54.4 percent, 8-of-23 three pointers for 34.8 percent and made 15-of-19 free throws for 78.9 percent and their best game of free throw shooting this season. LOC made 50 percent of their shots on 27-of-54 shots, 38.5 percent in threes with 5-of-13 and 16-of-23 foul shots made for 69.6 percent.

FVSU's senior forward Brandon Davey (Warner Robins, GA) led all scorers with 28-points, while going 8-for-8 at the free throw line, 8-of-14 from the field, 4-of-9 in threes, 5 rebounds, one steal and 3 assist. Senior guard Joshuah Davis (Augusta, GA) added 14 points, 3 assist, and 2 steals and blocked 3 shots and senior forward Corey Hunter (Cincinnati, OH) added another 11 points. Senior forward Nigel Domineck (Atlanta, GA) grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds, 12 points, and senior point guard Anthony Bell (Detroit, MI) dished out a game-high 6 assist.

Marcel Hawkins led the Magicians in scoring and rebounds with 18 points and 9 boards, while blocking one shot and 3 steals.

LOC out rebounded FVSU 32-29, while FVSU outscored LOC in the paint 45-34, 25-17 off turnover and 31-6 in fast break points, LOC scored 13 points to 6 off second chance shots and 29 points to 22 from their bench.

Both teams shot well in the first half with 11 lead changes and 4 ties. FVSU's Hunter had a dunk at the 2:23 mark giving FVSU a 5 point spread. The Magicians Jerry Hampton cut that lead to 3, and then Davey's layup forced the lead back to 5 at halftime. The Magicians Marcel Hawkins tied the game in the second half at 48-48 with 18:47 left, then FVSU's Zack Harmon layup at the 7:40 mark would give the Wildcats their largest lead thus for 10 points (68-58). Daequan Mitchell-Fie's 3-pointer for LOC would lead them on a 10-0 run for a 68-68 tie with 4:45 remaining. Davey's made a jumper at the 3:50 mark to put the Wildcats out front for good at 72-70.

The Wildcats will face the Lions of Paine College at home on Saturday, January 18 at 8 p.m.
