Box Score FORT VALLEY, GA (January 20, 2014) – Fort Valley State University Lady Wildcats improve their record to 8-9 and 6-2 in conference play with a 65-58 victory over the Lady Tigers of Benedict College (12-6; 6-2) Monday, January 20 at the HPE Complex.
Benedict led FVSU 34-22 at the half, while both teams went 12-for-12 in points in the paint and senior forward
Shytina Harley (Tampa, FL) had 8 points. Senior forward
Briana Shepherd (Birmingham, AL) layup with 13:27 to go tied the game at 8-8, but BC's Britenque Harrison gave the Lady Tigers a 12-10 lead and a 10 point run 20-10.
The Lady Wildcats hit 25.7 percent of their shots from the field and 57.1 percent at the free throw line. Benedict made 46.4 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent at the line. For the game, FVSU made 21-of-61 (34.4 %) shots and 18-of-30 (60 %) in free throws. BC scored on 21-of-61 (34.4 %) baskets while hitting 10-of-23 (43.5 %) foul shots.
Shepherd's jumper in the second half tied the game at 41-41, and then
D'Ambria Thomas layup with 5:29 left gave the Lady Wildcats the lead for good at 47-46.
Senior guard
Antionna Jefferson (Opelika, AL) had 16 points, 6 rebounds for FVSU, and junior forward
Carmenonique Dawson (Thomasville, GA) added 15 points, 7 rebounds, as well as a game-high 5 assist. Harley snaked 14 points and 7 rebounds, while junior forward
Brittnee Hazel (Loganville, GA) grabbed a game-high 10 boards.
Amanda Toliver had 22 points to lead Benedict.
The next game for FVSU Lady Wildcats is Thursday, January 23 in Selma, AL as the team plays Selma University at 6 p.m.
