ATLANTA, GA (November 1, 2014) – The Fort Valley State University Wildcats football program was knocked out of the SIAC Eastern Division Title with the 21-24 loss to Morehouse in Atlanta, Saturday night at B. T. Harvey Stadium.
FVSU drops to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the SIAC, while Morehouse improve to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Morehouse punter Temitayo Agoro fumbled the punt on Morehouse 4-yard line;
Karonte Donaldson recovered for FVSU on MHC 4- yard line. Brandon Thomas later scored from 4-yards out in the first quarter to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 3:32 to go. (
Juan Serna kick was good).
FVSU defense held the Maroon Tigers to six total yards of offense in the first quarter. They had -19 yards rushing and 13-yards passing. The Wildcats had 53 rushing yards and 18-yards in passing for 71-yards of total offense.
With 7:21 remaining in the second quarter,
Malcolm Eady threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Drelon freeman to cap a 6 play, 36-yard drive; (
Juan Serna kick was good) for the 14-0 lead.
Morehouse Monqavious Johnson connected for two touchdown passes to Lake McGuffie for 28 and 1-yard to pull to 14-12 just before halftime; Alexis Gonzales missed both PAT attempts.
At the half, FVSU had 177-yards of total offense, 63 on the ground and 114 by air, while MHC added 62-yards of total offense, -18 rushing and 80-yards passing.
At the 12:38 mark in the third quarter, FVSU increased their lead to 17-12 on
Juan Serna 38-yard field goal.
MHC's Shelton Hamilton closed the gap in the fourth quarter, as he scored from 3-yards out completing a 18 play, 95-yard dive; Monqavious Johnson PAT rush attempt failed as he fumbled, then picked up by
LeRon Furr and return for a defensive PAT (2 points) to put FVSU back in front 19-18.
The Maroon Tigers would lead for the first time with 1:32 left on the scoreboard. Hamilton 3-yard touchdown rush gave MHC the 24-19 lead. Then, Mongavious Johnson tried another failed PAT rush attempt and picked up by FVSU's
Aaron Davis and returned for a defensive PAT, cutting the lead 21-24.
The Wildcats finished the game with 242 total yards of offense and MHC had 255. FVSU rushed for 67-yards and passed for 175, while MHC rushed for 120-yards and 135-yards passing.
