ALBANY, GA (November 29, 2014) – Fort Valley State (1-6) fell to Columbus State University (5-0) in game one of the Peach Belt/SIAC Challenge 81-60 this afternoon in Albany at the Albany State HPE Gymnasium. The host team (Albany State) played Georgia Southwestern University in game two of the challenge.
Senior forward
Carmenonique Dawson led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 14 points, while making 7-of-8 free throws and pulling down 5 rebounds. Senior center
Brittnee Hazel had a team-high 12 rebounds, 4 blocks and 6 points and senior guard
D'Ambria Thomas dished out a team-high 4 assist, added 6 boards and 6 points. Red-shirt sophomore
Shereba Montgomery attached 8 points, 6 rebounds and two blocks,while freshman center
Amber Harris added another 8 points.
Columbus State placed six players in double figures with Dee Dee Deshazer leading all scorers with 23 points, Michelle Mitchell 12, Britteny Tatum, Ashley Asouzu, Kadayasha Jones and Carrie Washington each added 10 points apiece. Washington led all rebounders with a game-high 17 rebounds and blocked four shots.
CSU led by 11 points twice in the first half, before FVSU went on an 11-0 run to cut the lead to 29-30 with 2:38 left. CSU jump back out front on a 7-1 run to take a 36-30 lead to the lock room.
The Lady Wildcats never led in this game, as the Lady Cougars man handled FVSU in the second half by taking their largest margin of 25-points (81-56) with 1:01 remaining.
For the game the Lady Wildcats shot 32.4 percent from the field by making 23-of-71 shots and hitting 76.5 percent of their free throws on 13-of-17 shots. FVSU made just one three pointer on 17 try's and turned the ball over 28 times.
The Lady Cougars scored on 28-of-70 shots for 40.0 percent shooting, while making 20-of-34 free throw baskets. CSU had 23 turn overs and 20 assist.
FVSU out rebounded CSU 52-51.
FVSU will face Georgia Southwestern University on Sunday, November 30, 2014 at 4 p.m. in the Peach Belt/SIAC Challenge in Albany, GA.
