FORT VALLEY, GA (December 6, 2014) – Fort Valley State Lady Wildcats (1-9) drop their seventh straight non-conference contest 64-58 to Georgia College and State University (4-2) on Saturday at the HPE Complex on the campus of FVSU.
Senior guard
Antionna Jefferson led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 13 points, while senior center
Brittnee Hazel added 10 points and made 4-of-4 free throws. Red-shirt sophomore forward
Shereba Montgomery led all with a season and game-high 17 rebounds, 7 points and blocked one shot. Senior point guard
D'Ambria Thomas dished out a game-high 5 assist, 5 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.
Georgia College and State was led by Shanteona Keys with 19 points and 10 rebounds, as she hit 6-of-7 free throws. Enisha Donley and Belinda Schaafsma added 11 points each.
In the first half, FVSU made 12-of-36 (33.3 percent) shots from the floor, while hitting 6-of-8 (75.0 percent) foul shots.
GCS made 31.4 percent of their shots in the first half by making 11-of-35 shots and going 5-of-8 at the foul line for 62.5 percent.
FVSU led by 6 points three times in the first half at the 10:48, 9:11 and 8:40 mark. GCS tied the game at 23-23 with 4:10 remaining, but FVSU increased their lead back to 7 with 1:52 left. GCS made layup at the horn would send FVSU to half up 32-29.
The Lady Wildcats shot just 29.7 percent from the field for the game, while making 22-of-74 shots, 20.0 percent in 3-pointers on 5-of-25 shots and 9-of-12 free throws for 75.0 percent.
GCS scored on 23-of-65 shots for 35.4 percent shooting for the game and made 15-of-22 free throws for 68.2 percent.
In the second half, GCS tied the game at 32-32 with 19:54 to go. GCS took the lead for good at 43-41 with 13:16 left. GCS largest lead came at 6:49 with an 11-points (58-47) lead. FVSU closed the gap to 4 (58-62) with 1:14 left.
GCS out rebounded the Lady Wildcats 54-47, while the Lady Wildcats finished with 13 turnovers to GCS's 18.
The next game for the Lady Wildcats will be December 15, as they host Brewton Parker College at 6 p.m.
