Brandon Davey (Warner Robins, GA) double-double led the team to an 81-74 victory over Clark Atlanta University (12-10; 8-6) on Thursday.
Davey had a team-high 17 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assist and a 4-for-5 night at the free throw line. Senior forward
Corey Hunter (Cincinnati, OH) drained 12 points and blocked two shots, while senior forward
Nigel Domineck (Atlanta, GA) added 11 points and 8 rebounds and sophomore center
Ralph Wilson had 10 points on a 4-for-5 shooting night.
Jarrel Joye led Clark Atlanta with 19 points and Jordan Husley had 14 rebounds and 11 points. Derek Harper put up 14 points, Kevin James 13 points and Dwayne Bingham added 10.
Fort Valley State scored on 38.2 percent in the second half as they increased their lead. The Wildcats might have won more easily, but they made just 25-of-43 free throws.
The Wildcats held Clark Atlanta to 33.8 percent shooting and a 4-for-27 night from 3-point land.
Clark Atlanta went on a 19-9 run early in the first half, but Hunter's free throw cut the lead to 24-25. His jumper with 1:13 left before half gave Fort Valley State their first lead 26-25, then another 3-pointer by Hunter with seven seconds left would send the Wildcats to half up 29-25.
Montreal Holley's jumper gave the Wildcats a 34-27 lead in the second half, but the Panthers James tied the game 41-41 on a dunk.
Hunter sank another 3-point for a 48-43 Fort Valley State lead, and then James jumper tied the game for the Panthers at 51-51.
Joye hit a jumper to give the Panthers a 60-55 lead with 6:14 left and their last lead of the night as Fort Valley State went on a 80-68 run.
The Wildcats out rebounded the Panthers 58-53, while scoring 26-22 points in the paint, Clark Atlanta outscored Fort Valley in every other category.
Fort Valley State will travel to Albany, GA on Saturday, February 22 to take on Albany State in an 8 pm contest.
