FORT VALLEY, GA (January 3, 2015) – Senior forward
Carmenonique Dawson (Thomasville, GA) led Fort Valley State to their first SIAC conference win with a game-high 22 points and a 80-64 victory over the Lady Dragons of Lane College on Saturday afternoon at the HPE Complex on FVSU's campus.
FVSU improved their overall record to 3-9 and 1-0 in the SIAC, while Lane fell to 0-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Dawson drained 6-of-6 free throws, hit 7-of-16 shots from the floor, 2-of-8 baskets from behind the arc and grabbed 6 rebounds. Senior center
Brittnee Hazel (Loganville, GA) scored 17 points, added 7 rebounds, blocked 5 shots and yes, went 1-for-1 from 3-point land. Senior guard
Davina High (Atlanta, GA) added 16 points while hitting 4-of-6 three's and senior point guard
D'Ambria Thomas (Pelham, GA) dished out a game-high 8 assist, while scoring 9 baskets, 7 rebounds and having 6 steals. Senior forward
Antionna Jefferson (Opelika, AL) pulled down an additional 7 boards and 6 steals.
Chloe Roberts led the Lady Dragons with 15 points and 7 rebounds and Tiffany Martin added 14 points, 5 boards and a team-high 4 assist.
The Lady Wildcats scored on 39 percent of their shots from the field (30-of-77) for the game, while making 8-of-24 three pointers (33.3 percent) and going 12-of-24 at the foul line (50 percent. FVSU went to have up 39-26 and put up 41 points to 38 in the second half for the win.
The Lady Dragons made 22-of-60 shots from the floor (36.7 percent) and 48.6 percent at the free throw line (18-of-37) for the game.
FVSU grabbed 61 rebounds to Lane's 40, while edging Lane in assist 22-9 and 16 steals to 12. Both teams scored 32 points each in the paint, 16 points each off second chance shots, while the Lady Wildcats scored 37 points to 17 off turnovers.
FVSU will host Kentucky State University on Monday, January 5 at 6 p.m. at the HPE Complex on FVSU campus.
