FRANKFORT, KY (October 10, 2015) – Fort Valley State University Wildcats entered today's game riding high and looking to improve their SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) record to 4-0. The Wildcats did just that with a 35-10 win over the Kentucky State University Thorobreds. This game was big for both teams as each came into today's contest in first place in their division.
FVSU's overall record improves to 4-2 and 4-0 in conference play, while KSU drops to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the SIAC.
The Wildcats started the scoring with 13 points in the first, 8 points in the second and 7 points in the third and fourth quarters, while KSU added 3 points in the second quarter with one minute left before halftime and another 7 points in the fourth.
FVSU held KSU to -15 rushing yards for the game, while gaining 168-yards. KSU racked up 23 first downs to FVSU's 13 and out passed the Wildcats 344 to 147-yards. Both team had more than 300 yards of total offense with KSU edging out the Wildcats with 329-yards to 315.
Fumbles played a huge part in the game with the Wildcats fumbling the rock 5-times and losing the ball three times. KSU put the ball on the grass three times and recovered one.
FVSU picked off KSU 4-times, while scoring 21 unanswered points off turnovers. Thorobred quarterbacks stayed on the ground all afternoon as the Wildcats had 9 sacks. KSU maintained possession of the ball 33:04 minutes to FVSU's 26:56.
Senior running back
Seth Hill gave the Wildcats their first 100-yard game of the season on 4 rushes for 104-yards. Hill capped off the afternoon with a 93-yard touchdown run.
Sophomore quarterback
Malcolm Eady threw 4 touchdowns on the day, while completing 12-of-18 passes for 147-yards. Senior wide receiver
Jevon Bell grabbed two of those touchdown passes while leading the receiving core with 3 catches for 66-yards. Sophomore wide receiver
Drelon Freeman added 3 catches, 54-yards and a touchdown, while senior wide receiver
Alexander Morgan completed the air attacked by catching two passes and one score.
Sophomore kicker/punter
Juan Serna punted 4-times for an average of 43.5-yards and a long of 52-yards. Serna for the first time had a 56-yard field goal blocked and missed a 41-yarder.
KSU's Alex Springs completed 20-of-47 passes for 280-yards, one touchdown, 4 interceptions and sacked 5-times. Charles Johnson gave the Wildcats headaches with 8 catches for 116-yards.
Defensively, freshman middle linebacker
Leon McQuarker had 6 tackles (3 solos), one sack, 7-yards in losses and one tackle-for-loss for 7-yards. Sophomore safety
Karontae Donaldson and senior linebacker
Seth Hill had 5 tackles apiece. Donaldson forced and recovered a fumble and Hill had one sack, one tackle-for-loss, one pass break-up, one blocked kick and 3 quarterback hurries.
Junior cornerback
Tracey White led the team with two interceptions, sophomore cornerback
Andrew Campbell and junior cornerback
Dominique Burks had one interception each.
FVSU had commanded the first half as Eady threw three touchdown, two 36-yarders and one from 4-yardsout. Bell and Freeman was on the receiving end of the 36-yarder's and Morgan on the 4-yard touchdown, Serna kicks were good (21-0).
Thorobreds kicker Bill Rose connected on a 37-yard field goal with one minute left before halftime to add KSU to the board (21-3).
At the half, KSU had rushed for just 8 total yards.
Rose for KSU had a chance to add three points with 12:47 left in the third quarter as Rose 37-yard field goal attempt failed wide left.
Eady completed a 5-yard pass to
Khari Lewis at the FVSU31, KSU's Lydell Simon caused Lewis to fumble and Simon recovered the fumble. At the 10:48 mark, Burks picked off a Springs pass at the FVSU4 and returned it 10-yards to the FVSU14. Senior defensive tackle
Samuel Goode was hit with a personal foul penalty to move the Wildcats back to the FVSU7. Then, on the very next play, Hill went around the right side for 93-yards and a touchdown, Serna kick was good 28-3.
The Wildcats scored their final points at 13:57 left in the fourth, Eady completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Bell, Serna kick was good 35-3.
KSU added to their scoring with an 8-yard pass from Springs to Slaughter with 6:50 remaining, Rose kick was good 35-10.
The Wildcats will return home for next week's matchup with Florida Tech University at Wildcat Stadium as it will be Senior Night. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
