LADY WILDCATS SOFTBALL SWEEPS BENEDICT TO REMAIN IN SECOND PLACE

COLUMBIA, SC (April 11, 2015) – With the sweep, Fort Valley State improved to 10-19 on the year and 10-4 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Lady Wildcats are two games in back of SIAC Eastern Division leader Albany State with five games remaining in the season. FVSU will face Albany State in the final SIAC three game series of the year on April 17 and 18 in Albany, GA.
 
The Lady Wildcats totaled thirteen hits in the games with senior center fielder Asia Buckner and junior second baseman Tr'Kia Grant leading the way with three hits apiece in the contest.
 
In game one of a scheduled double-header, junior third baseman Ashley Polke walked to lead off the fourth inning and would later score off Ricks single to left field. (1-0)
 
The Lady Wildcats added three runs in the six inning with Polke's walk, senior short stop Kenya Shakoor tripled scoring Polke. Senior first baseman Crystal Richmond walked; junior second baseman Courtney Myles entered the game as a pinch runner for Richmond. Shakoor stole home and Myles scored the final run on an error by the first baseman. (4-1)
 
In the series finale, FVSU scored four runs in the second inning, six runs in the third and two runs in the fifth.
 
Richmond walked, Ricks and junior left fielder Hadiyah Walker reached base off hit pitches. Grant tripled to drive in the three runners, and Buckner singled scoring Grant. (4-1)
 
FVSU then added six more runs in the six inning with Shakoor walking, Richmond singling in Shakoor. Walker walked and Grant tripled scoring Richmond and Walker. Sophomore third baseman DeAunna Jackson doubled to score Grant and Buckner doubled scoring Jackson. Ricks doubled Buckner home. (10-3)
 
The Lady Wildcats final two runs came in the fourth inning, as Ricks walked then scored on Walker's double. Grant's double scored Walker for the final run. (12-4)

FVSU will play Benedict in the third game of the series on Sunday at 3 p.m.
