LADY WILDCATS SOFTBALL DOWN ALBANY STATE 5-1

ALBANY, GA (April 17, 2015) – Fort Valley State opened their season ending three game series with Albany State University for shot at first place in the SIAC Eastern Division with a 5-1 win.
 
The Lady Wildcats improved to 11-20 overall and 11-5 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to remain in second place, while ASU dropped to 16-26 overall and 14-3 in the conference. With two victories over the Lady Rams on Saturday and a victory over Clark Atlanta on Tuesday, April 21st, FVSU will take over first place in the SIAC Eastern Division.
 
Lady Rams LaKymbreyia reached base in the first-inning on an error by the first baseman and later scored the first run on Anna Peters double. (0-1)
 
Sophomore catcher Tatum Maxwell drove in FVSU's first run of the game in the second-inning off an error by the short stop to drive in junior left fielder Hadiyah Walker after she walked to get on. Sophomore third baseman DeAunna Jackson doubled down the right field line to score Maxwell from second. (2-1)
 
The Lady Wildcats increased their lead by three runs in the third-inning with junior third baseman Ashley Polke doubling to right center and senior short stop Kenya Shakoor driving Polke across with a double down the left field line. Ricks reached base on an error by the left fielder and Shakoor scored. (4-1)
 
FVSU added an insurance run in the seventh-inning as Shakoor doubled to right center and Ricks single scoring Shakoor. (5-1)
 
Ricks would retire the side in order in the seventh to pick up the win and improve to 10-12 on the year. Ricks struck out three batters in the game and allowed just two hits.
 
FVSU had seven hits in the game with Shakoor leading the way with 3-for-4 day at the plate and Polke, Ricks, Jackson and junior second baseman Tr'Kia Grant having one hit apiece. Ricks drove in two RBI's and Shakoor crossed the plate twice.
 
The Lady Wildcats left seven runners on base, while Albany State stranded three.
 
The two teams meet again on tomorrow for a double-header with game scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
