FORT VALLEY, GA (January 30, 2016) – Senior forward
Katice Williams led Fort Valley State University Lady Wildcats (7-14: 6-6) to victory with a double-double 12-points and 10 rebounds over Miles College (10-8; 7-5) 71-55 Saturday Afternoon at the HPE Complex.
Williams scored on 5-of-10 shots from the field, making one three, blocking one shot, one assist and one steal. Freshman guard
Daknequa White had 15-points and junior forward
Shereba Montgomery and senior center
Brittnee Hazel added 10-points each. Montgomery grabbed 9 boards and blocked three shots. Senior point guard
Jayme Gilbert and freshman guard
Rayneshia Clay scored 8 apiece
Tierra Williams and Rickeytha Davis scored 9-points apiece to lead the Lady Bears, while Morgan Hardy had 9 rebounds.
Miles out rebounded the Lady Wildcats 54-45, while turning the basketball over 30 times to FVSU's 26. The Lady Wildcats scored 24-points to 22 off turnovers, Miles got 34-points to 30 off points in the paint, 24-11 off second chance shots and 26-22 points off bench player and 14-12 on fast breaks.
FVSU made 43.5% (27-of-62) of their shots, hit 33.3% (6-of-18) threes and 68.8% (11-of-16) free throws. Miles hit 19-of-69 (27.5%) baskets and went for 39.5% (15-of-38) in free throws.
Montgomery's jumper started the scoring for the Lady Wildcats as well as her layup to increase the score to 11-2 with 5:50 to go in the first period. Miles Rickeytha Davis tied the game at 13-13, and then FVSU's William free throw made it 14-13.
Briunca Caldwell pushed FVSU's lead to 24-15 in the second period and with fifteen second left before half FVSU'
Ricarsha Johnson two foul shots upped the score to 31-23.
In the third, Hazel's layup improved the lead by 13 (39-26), then Clay's three pointer upped the lead to 56-35 with ten seconds left. Fourth period, FVSU led by 23 (60-37) with 7:47 remaining and Miles would get no closer than 14-points (67-53).
Next game: FVSU will hit the road to Albany, GA., as they play the Lady Rams of Albany State University for their homecoming on Saturday, February 6 at 6 p.m.
