FORT VALLEY, GA (October 22, 2016) – Senior quarterback
Otis Brown rushed around right side for 2-yard game winner to push Fort Valley State University (2-6; 2-3) to 30-28 homecoming victory over Central State University (1-6; 1-3) Saturday at Wildcat Stadium. This was a tale of two half's, Fort Valley State taking number one and Central State coming back in the second half.
Central State out gained FVSU in rushing 202-yards to 110, while FVSU passed for 128-yards to Central State's 75 and total offensive yards went Central State's way 277 to 238 yards. Central State led in time of possession 36:43 minutes to FVSU's 23:17 minutes.
Junior running back
Chauncey Jackson led the Wildcats in rushing with 60-yards on 12 carries and Brown's 36-yards on 13 tries and two touchdowns. Brown connected on 6-of-18 passes for 128-yards, one touchdown and an interception.
Junior wide receiver
Bodarius Johnson had two catches for 74-yards and sophomore wide receiver
Christopher Weems one catch for a 43-yard touchdown.
Senior defensive back Demonta Prather led the defense with 14 tackles (4 solos), half sack (1-yard) and one tackle-for-losses (2-yards). Senior defensive back
Brian Walker and senior defensive lineman
Samuel Goode added 10 tackles each, while Walker attached a half sack (1-yard), 1.5 tackles-for-losses (8-yards), two interceptions and one pass break-up.
Weems 43-yard touchdown catch gave the Wildcats the lead with 10:43 left in the first quarter, junior kicker
Juan Serna PAT good (FVSU 7- CSU 0). Sophomore linebacker
Aaron Dore blocked Isaiah Smith's punt, sophomore defensive back
Karonte Donaldson recovered and returned 40-yards for the touchdown with 4:38 left, Serna PAT failed (FVSU 13 – CSU 0).
Brown added another score from 1-yard out with 5:34 remaining in the quarter, Serna PAT good (FVSU 20 – CSU 0).
CSU made a few changes during halftime and came out on fire to take the lead in the third quarter by scoring 21 unanswered points, CSU 21 – FVSU 20. CSU added their final touchdown in the fourth quarter with 13:20 left, (CSU 28 – FVSU 20).
The Wildcats drove down the field on the very next drive setting up Serna 27-yard field goal, (FVSU 23 – CSU 28).
FVSU's final score came on a 14-play, 65-yard drive, with a fourth down and 7-yards for a first down, Brown ran for 8-yards to the 4-yard line and a first down. Jackson rushed for no gain, but CSU's defense was offside and the penalty moved the ball to the 2. With the clock running out Brown dove across the goal line from 2-yards out for the win, Serna PAT good, (FVSU 30 – CSU 28).
Next game is big for the Wildcats as they travel up I-75 to Atlanta to take on the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College on Saturday, October 29 at 2 pm at B. T. Harvey Stadium.
If the Wildcats (1-1 East Div.) beat Morehouse (0-3 East Div.) and Albany State (2-0 East Div.) defeat Benedict (2-1 East Div.), FVSU will play Albany State for the SIAC Eastern Division Title on November 5
th in Columbus.
