FORT VALLEY, GA (November 19, 2016) – Fort Valley State University Lady Wildcats (0-2) had two players in double figures in a 76-53 loss to Columbus State University (2-0) this afternoon in the Peach Belt-SIAC Challenge at the HPE Complex.
FVSU shot just 24.6 percent from the field while making 14-of-57 shots, hitting 4-of-12 trays for 33.3 percent and draining 21-of-31 free throws for 67.7 percent. The Wildcats scored 16 points in the paint, 19 points off turnovers, and nine points on second chance shots, two points off fast breaks and 20 points from bench players.
CSU made 28-of-75 baskets from the floor for 37.3 percent shooting, 0-for-11 in three pointers and 20-of-29 at the foul line for 69.0 percent. The team had 44 points in the paint, 30 points off turnovers, 12 points on second chance shots, 18 points off fast breaks and 23 points from the bench players.
Freshman guard
Jomaiya Garner (Brunswick, Ga.) led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 13 points while making 5-of-6 free throws, hit 4-of-13 shots from the field, one assist and one steal. Junior guard Chantelle Rump (Sanford, Fl.) added 11 points, three rebounds and three baskets from behind the arc, while senior forward
Shekiyah Tarpkins (Social Circle, Ga.) grabbed seven rebounds, two assist and blocked a shot.
CSU's Alexis Carter, Britteny Tatum and Tatiana Wayne had 13 points each, as Carter and Ashley Asouzu pulled down 10 boards apiece.
Next game: FVSU will travel to Augusta, GA on November 21 for their first conference game of the season against Paine College at 6 p.m. and play Augusta State University on the November 22 at 6 p.m.
