Shekiya Tarpkins (Social Circle, GA) led three Lady Wildcats in double digits with a game-high 31-points in 71-65 victory over Kentucky State University (4-8; 1-4) Saturday afternoon at the Exum Center.
FVSU up 36-29 at the half, behind freshman guard
Daknequa White (Sandersville, GA) 11 points and Brittani Rizzi scoring nine points for KSU.
FVSU trailed by four after Rizzi three pointer and White's jumper giving the Lady Wildcats a four point (18-14) lead with 1:44 on the clock. Daphene Brown put KSU back up 19-18, but freshman guard
Nola Carter (Jacksonville, FL) jumper tied the game at 19 ending first quarter.
Second quarter, FVSU went up by five, then six and seven points with .29 seconds remaining in the half.
Third quarter, Lady Wildcats continued their scoring as they went on a 12-3 (46-33) run and a 17 point lead after senior center
Briunca Caldwell's (Atlanta, GA) free throw. Tarpkins added two free throws would gave the FVSU their largest lead of 19 in the final quarter. With .51 and .26 seconds remaining, KSU cut the margin to two points twice.
Tarpkins hit 11-of-20 shots from the field, made two 3-pointers, went 7-of-8 at the foul line, six rebound and had four steals. White and Caldwell added 15 and 11 points, with Caldwell grabbing a team-high seven rebounds.
Erin Spencer led KSU with 19-points and game-high 10 rebounds.
FVSU will travel to Wilberforce, OH to take on Central State University on Monday, January 1 at 6 pm.
