FORT VALLEY, GA (January 7, 2017) – Fort Valley State dropped a buzzer beater despite a game-high 28-points from senior forward
Shekiya Tarpkins (Social Circle, GA) in a 64-63 loss to Lane College Saturday afternoon at the HPE Complex.
Lady Wildcats drop to 4-9 overall and 3-2 in SIAC play, while LC improved to 6-8 and 5-1 in the conference.
FVSU went to half tied 29-29, Tarpkins hit 13-points and
Daknequa White had 11 and Keyana Johnson scored 10 for LC.
Briunca Caldwell free throw put FVSU up by six (15-9) with 3:33 left in the first quarter. LC tied the game at 15 with 2:16 to go and a quarter ending 19-17 score.
At 5:32, LC went up by seven (29-22), then, White's fast break layup would send both teams to halftime tied at 29.
In the third quarter, Caldwell's layup and White two free throws with 6:05 left gave FVSU the 39-35 advantage. Tarpkins made free throws with .12 seconds on the clock ended the quarter 50-41.
Lady Wildcats took an eight point lead in the fourth with 7:15 to go, but LC cut the lead to one (56-57), then went ahead 58-57 with 3:39 remaining. White's layup lifted FVSU to a 63-62 lead with 1:05 left, but Tarpkins turnover under the Lady Dragons basket and LC's Nolen ShaDa layup with .11 seconds on the clock gave the win to LC.
Tarpkins made 10-of-19 baskets from the field, hit two three pointers, made 6-of-8 free throws, four rebounds, team-high four assist, one block and seven steals. White added 15-points and Caldwell grabbed 10 rebounds and 12-points.
Keyana Jo with 17-points and Ashley Gayle had a game-high 11 boards.
