FORT VALLEY, GA – After starting one and three the Wildcats have put together back-to-back wins as Fort Valley State defeated conference foe Lane College 37-14 on Saturday, October 14 at Wildcat Stadium.
The Wildcats move to 3-3 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), while the Dragons dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Slade Jarman led the Wildcats to their second win in two weeks while completing 19-of-24 passes for 293-yards, four touchdowns and one interception.
Chauncey Jackson rushed for 67-yards on 18 tries and one touchdown.
Lorenzo Smothers had six carries for 37-yards and Tajee Steele caught a game-high five catches for 68-yards and two touchdowns for 22 and 8-yards. Smothers had 76-yards on three catches and added a 31-yard touchdown.
Daniel Gordon rounded out the scoring with a late touchdown for 52-yards.
Cameron Young paced the defense with nine tackles, while
Demetrius Harris,
David Brown and
Cannon Thomas had five tackles each. Harris had one sack for 8-yards loss and three quarterback hurries and Thomas had a half of a tackle-for-loss.
FVSU jumped out early on Jarman's 31-yard touchdown pass to Smother's in the first quarter;
Juan Serna's kick was good (7-0).
Chauncey Jackson added another seven points on a 14-yard touchdown run up the middle; Serna's kick was good (14-0).
Serna increased the score in the second quarter with a 20-yard field goal and Tajee Steele caught a 22-yard pass from Jarman on the left side and took it to the house after an 11-play, 84-yard drive; Serna's kick was good (24-0).
Daniel Gordon's 52-yard touchdown added to the scoring in the third quarter with 12:54 left; Serna's kick was good (31-0).
Lane managed to add seven points in the third quarter and another seven in the fourth quarter.
Steele completed the scoring for the Wildcats on an 8-yard pass from Jarman with 8:39 left in the game; Serna's kick failed (37-14).
FVSU controlled the game all afternoon while putting together an outstanding offensive plan as the team had 446-yards of total offense. They threw for 293-yards and rushed for 153 on the ground. FVSU allowed 136-yards of total offense for the Dragons while holding them to 27-yards in passing.
The Wildcats next game is on the road as they travel to Wilberforce, OH to play Central State University on Saturday, October 21 in a 1 pm game.
