Daknequa White's three point basket with 3.8 seconds remaining on the scoreboard sealed the deal for Fort Valley State University women's basketball team with a 49-48 victory over foe Albany State University Saturday night in Albany.
The Lady Wildcats improve their overall record to 8-16 and 7-8 in SIAC play, as they head to Birmingham for the SIAC basketball championship tournament. ASU fell to 5-18 overall and 4-9 in conference play.
Senior forward
Shekiya Tarpkins led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with a game-high 23 points and a team high eight rebounds, while going 3-for-3 at the free throw line, making 9-of-17 shots from the field, hitting two 3-pointers and three steals. White followed with 15 points and hit three 3-pointers. ASU out rebounded FVSU 45-38, while the Lady Wildcats forced ASU into 21 turnovers. FVSU managed to score just seven points off ASU's turnovers.
FVSU shot 33.3 % (18-of-54) from the floor, made 5-of-16 (31.3 %) 3-pointers and hit 50 % (8-of-16) free throws. The Lady Wildcats scored 22 points in the paint and put another 12 points on the board off second chance shots. The teams tied the game five times and changed leads seven.
Elesha Foster led the Lady Rams in scoring with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Kayla Green added 12 points.
FVSU's next game will be in SIAC championship play in Birmingham, Al., on February 27 at the Bill Harris Basketball Arena.
