FORT VALLEY, Ga. – In their final home match of the fall, the Wildcats appeared to have claimed an important victory. Paine College received a key fourth set point, forced a fifth set where it never trailed to claim a 3-2 win over the Fort Valley State volleyball team Saturday afternoon.

Tied at 24 in the fourth set, FVSU's Nia Bell's attack was called out and Paine (10-6/5-4 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) blocked the following point for a 26-24 win to force the game-deciding set. In the fifth set, the Lions netted the first five points of the fifth set and never trailed on the way to a 15-9 win.

Paine College took the first set (25-21), before FVSU (4-15/3-9 SIAC) rallied for control for wins in the second (25-12) and third sets (25-19).

Nia Thomas pounded her season-best 16 kills to go with 15 digs. Nia Bell added 16 kills, 11 digs and two blocks. Indian King chipped in nine kills to round out the home attackers. Rita Davis handed out 43 assists and dug nine attacks.

On the Wildcat defense, Ashley Simmons-Blair recorded 21 digs and Jaelyn Franklin 16. Kawonica Ridley served up four aces.

Lanica Phillips led the Lions with 13 kills, 15 assists and 11 digs.

FVSU completes its busy week of four matches in five days with a makeup Sunday, Oct. 28, match at Albany State starting at 3 p.m.
