Wright and Wildcats Rally to Take Final 3 Sets to defeat Lions

AUGUSTA, Ga. – After falling short in the game-deciding set at home Saturday afternoon, the Wildcats saw a young frontline player key a big comeback Tuesday evening. Ceirra Wright posted her best night of her freshman season and helped Fort Valley State rally to take the final three sets for the 3-2 road win over Paine College.

The Lions (11-8/7-6 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) went out to a 2-0 match lead with 25-16 and 25-21 first two set finals. The improving Wildcats (5-16/4-10 SIAC) buckled down and ran off three-straight set wins of 25-23 and 26-24, while Wright downed her final kill on the night to end set five, 15-12.

Wright lined eight kills with only one error in 18 attacks for a .389 percentage to go with a solo block.

Sophomore India King added a successful performance of her own with 13 kills in 29 swings with four errors for a .310 percentage, while she had four total blocks.

Rita Davis handed out 40 assists and dug 18 attacks along with an ace and one kill. Along the frontline as well, the two Nias registered double-figure kills – Nia Bell hit 15 kills, dug 20 balls, served three aces and had a block assist. Nia Thomas chipped in 15 digs and 12 kills for the third Wildcat with a double-double.

Ashley Simmons-Blair led the defense with 18 digs and a pair of aces, while Jaelyn Franklin contributed 10 digs.

Following the two opening sets, the Paine momentum was reversed. FVSU held a 9-6 lead early on and extended it with a Wright kill (13-8) and a Bell winner (14-9) to five points. The Lions came back to edge ahead, 20-19, but the Wildcats netted six of the final nine points to extend the match on a Wright kill, Simmons-Blair aces and King kill to end the set.

FVSU continued with a strong fourth set start as Wright killed the first point and blocked the second one to help for a 4-1 lead. Simmons-Blair served seven points in a row for a 12-2 FVSU advantage. Paine College answered with seven consecutive points in a row of its own to pull within 12-9. Tied at 24-24 late, a Lions service error and a bad set gave the Wildcats the 26-24 win to force a fifth set.

After falling behind 2-0 to start the game-deciding set, FVSU came back to lead 10-6 and then 12-7 on a Wright kill. Wright capped her best night with her eighth kill to end the match and seal the Wildcats comeback, 3-2, victory with the 15-12 final.

FVSU completes its regular season on Thursday night with a 6 p.m. match at Clark Atlanta.
