Wildcats Conversions Fall Short, Panthers Slip Past for Win

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – In a tight game, the Wildcats came up short in converting opportunities Saturday night. Clark Atlanta slipped past on a fourth-quarter score and registered two final first downs to edge a 21-19 victory over Fort Valley State in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football action.

Behind 21-13 midway through the final frame, the Wildcats (1-5/1-2 SIAC East) took advantage of good field position starting on the Panthers (2-4/1-1 SIAC East). Garrel Quainton found Lorenzo Smothers on a deep out in the left corner for a 38-yard touchdown on fourth-and-one with 5:34. Quainton two-point conversion to tie the contest went incomplete in the back of the endzone to keep it at 21-19. Clark Atlanta took over with 5:27 and was able to run out the clock after a third-down defensive offsides and two quarterback Charles Stafford third down runs past the sticks.

The FVSU defense played takeaway three times with only a Majeste Hansberry 36-yard interception for a touchdown late in the first quarter amounting to home points. The Wildcats missed their first extra point, a 45-yard field goal to the left with 12 minutes in the second quarter, threw an interception on the first offensive play after a forced fumble and nice fumble recovery return of 22 yards, and failed on a 4th-and-2 from the Panthers 11-yardline with 10 minutes left in the game.

The Wildcat defense forced nine Panthers punts, while it registered five sacks and nine tackles for loss. Linebacker David Brown posted his first double-digit tackle game with 10 to go with two fumble recoveries, a sack and one tackle for loss. Voris Bryant added nine stops, three tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble.

Camron Young chipped in eight tackles, six solo and a tackle for loss. Young's fellow defensive back Aaron Dore had six stops, 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and one breakup.

Jamari Clark races for 67 yards in the 4th quarter
Offensively, FVSU amassed only 11 fewer yards than Clark Atlanta on four less snaps. Jamari Clark rumbled for 89 yards on 10 carries, including a 67-yard rush through the defense to set up the opening Wildcat touchdown. Smothers pulled in six passes for 101 yards with his 38-yard TD grab, a rush for two yards and two punt returns for seven more yards. Quainton finished his night 19 of 31 for 177 yards with one TD and one interception.

For the Panthers, running back Roger Thomas rushed 23 times for 144 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning 45-yard score in the early fourth quarter. Kameron Rogers paced the CAU defense with 10 tackles, three for loss and two sacks along with forcing a fumble.

On its second possession, Clark Atlanta's Thomas plunged in from a yard out after a key 37-yard completion setup the drive. After a home punt, Hansberry picked off quarterback Elijah Odom and raced 36 yards to pull FVSU to within 7-6.

CAU added its second score before the end of the second quarter for a 14-6 margin. Fort Valley State went 84 yards on three plays compliments of Clark's 67-yard run burst through the CAU defense, before Jeremy McCants rushed in from five yards away for a 14-13 tally.

After a scoreless third quarter, Thomas took the fifth play of the final stanza 45 yards on a rush for what would be the game-deciding points with 13:38 left.

FVSU drove from its own 37-yardline down to the visiting 11-yardline on eight plays off two Smothers receptions of 18 and 14 yards. On fourth-and-2 from the CAU 11 yardline, Quainton option pitched it to O'Brien Anderson, who was stopped a yard behind the line with 9:54 left.

The FVSU defense held on the next Clark Atlanta possession on three plays to force another punt. The Wildcats offense went 47 yards to make it 21-19, but they could not convert the game-tying, two-point conversion or stop the Panther offense from getting three first downs to end the game.

FVSU will stay at home for its third-straight home game next weekend with Tuskegee coming to town for a 6 p.m. Saturday night, Oct. 13, game.
